Blue John stone is a rare, semi-precious mineral fluorite, found only at one location in the world, Treak Cliff Cavern, at the Western end of Hope Valley, near Castleton in Derbyshire, England. The name Blue John derives from the French Bleu Jaune, meaning Blue John. It was first discovered by miners exploring the cavern for lead.
Mother of pearl is a smooth, shiny substance that forms the inner layer of the shells of some mollusks, such as oysters and abalones. It is composed mainly of calcium carbonate and is created by the mollusk to protect its shell and, in some cases, to form pearls.
