An ammonite is an extinct marine mollusk that belonged to the subclass Ammonoidea within the class Cephalopoda, which also includes modern-day squids, octopuses, and nautiluses. These creatures lived in the seas from the Devonian period (around 419 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous period (about 66 million years ago).
Ammonites had a distinctive coiled shell that resembled a tightly wound spiral, often featuring intricate patterns and ridges on its surface. The name "ammonite" comes from the ancient Egyptian god Ammon (also known as Amun), whose ram horns were thought to resemble the coiled shells of these creatures. Ammonites are of great interest to paleontologists because of their abundance in the fossil record and their usefulness in dating and correlating rock layers, providing valuable insights into ancient marine ecosystems and the history of life on Earth.
